Examination into the location of the placenta

When you are around 20 weeks pregnant you will undergo the 20 week ultrasound. With this structural ultrasound examination we see that in some cases the placenta is (partly) over the cervix. If the placenta is too low, this can stand in the way of a natural birth. Do you have a low-lying placenta? Then it is important to check the location of the placenta later in the pregnancy and to check whether the cervix is free.

When can placenta localization take place?

We ideally carry out the placenta localization from the 30th week of your pregnancy. During the examination, the ultrasound technician performs both an external and internal ultrasound. This way we can see where the placenta is located and how low it is. For an optimal image we advise you to come with a full bladder. We also recommend that you leave any possible other children at home. This will allow you to be more relaxed. Would you like to be well prepared? Then check out our tips for your appointment at Ultrasound Centre SAM&.

What do we look at during the placenta localization?

Did you hear during the 20 week ultrasound (or during a later ultrasound) that your placenta is too close to or over the cervix? Then we will check again after the 30th week of your pregnancy. This examination is known as the placenta localization. We usually see that the placenta has moved to the correct location again. But it is obviously important that we are certain of this. During the examination we look at:

  • the location of the placenta
  • the size of the unborn child
  • the amount of amniotic fluid in the womb.

After the examination we will discuss the results with your midwife or gynaecologist.

What about the costs and reimbursement?

You do not pay for the placenta localization. Because it is a medical ultrasound your health care insurer will reimburse the costs from the basic health care insurance. You do however need a reference. This ultrasound takes about fifteen minutes and is done in 2D. You will receive 2 black/white photos of your unborn baby. Would you like to see your baby in 3D or 4D during this phase of the pregnancy? Consider having a fun ultrasound performed at Ultrasound Centre SAM&.
