How long have you been pregnant?
The term ultrasound is the first of the two medical ultrasounds that you get when you are pregnant. The ultrasound technician accurately measures your unborn baby during this ultrasound and calculates how long you have been pregnant. So you know exactly how old your baby is. And how nice: we will also immediately tell you when you are due.
When will you get this first term ultrasound?
The term ultrasound is an external ultrasound and takes place early in the pregnancy. Usually when you are 10 - 12 weeks pregnant. Have you not been pregnant this long? Then we will perform an internal ultrasound. To get a good image with an internal ultrasound it is important that your bladder is full. We also advise you to leave any other children at home. This is not only more comfortable for you, but should you unexpectedly receive bad news, then the children will not hear this right away. Would you like to be well prepared? What do we look at during the term ultrasound?
The main purpose of the term ultrasound is to determine exactly how long you have been pregnant. But we obviously want to know more about your unborn child. During the term ultrasound we check:
- if your child’s heart is beating
- the exact duration of your pregnancy
- if you are perhaps pregnant with twins
- whether the pregnancy is definitely in the womb
What about the costs and reimbursement?
You do not pay for this term ultrasound. Because it is a medical ultrasound your health care insurer will reimburse this from the basic health care insurance. The term ultrasound takes about fifteen minutes and is done in 2D. That means that you will receive two black and white photos afterwards. Nice to keep.
