Checking the position of your baby

Between the 32nd and 36th week of pregnancy, most babies automatically turn with their heads down. This position is most ideal for the child. By feeling your belly, your midwife or gynaecologist can determine how your child is lying. Sometimes during the course of your pregnancy there is some doubt about the position. If that is the case, you will receive a referral for a position ultrasound. Because we obviously want to know before delivery how your baby is positioned.

When can the position ultrasound take place?

If, after an external examination, your obstetrician or gynaecologist has doubts about the position of your child, you will receive a position ultrasound. This examination takes place after the 30th week of your pregnancy. We can usually see the position well with an external ultrasound. We advise you to leave any other children at home. This will make it a lot more comfortable for you. Would you like to be well prepared? Then check out our tips for your appointment at Ultrasound Centre SAM&.

What do we look at during the position ultrasound?

Obviously, during the position ultrasound, we check exactly where the baby is positioned in your abdomen. During the examination we also check if:

  • your baby is growing well
  • there is sufficient amniotic fluid in the womb

What about the costs and reimbursement?

You do not pay for this position ultrasound. Because it is a medical ultrasound your health care insurer will reimburse the costs from the basic health care insurance. You do however need a reference. This ultrasound takes about fifteen minutes and is done in 2D. You will receive 2 black/white photos of your unborn baby. Would you like to see your baby in 3D or 4D during this phase of the pregnancy? Consider having a fun ultrasound performed at Ultrasound Centre SAM&.
