Extra screening during your pregnancy

When you are pregnant, you will be offered the term ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound. It is possible to get an extra screening of your unborn child: the combination test. We hereby examine early in the pregnancy the likelihood that your child will have Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome or Patau syndrome. The examination does not entail any risks for you or your unborn child. The examination does not provide certainty; it is a probability calculation. The number of centres that may still perform this combination test is limited. Ultrasound Centre SAM& may, as one of the few centres in our region, continue to perform the combination test/NT.

The combination test in 2 parts

As the name suggests; the combination test combines data from 2 examinations. We give you a brief explanation about the 2 parts:

1. Blood examination in the mother

This happens between the 9th and 12th week of pregnancy, preferably one week before your appointment at Ultrasound Centre SAM&. You can have the blood test carried out in the Amstelland Hospital laboratory We would like to know on what date you had blood collected.

2. Neck fold measurement with your unborn child

This is a medical ultrasound that we perform between the 11th and 13th week of pregnancy (preferably in the 12th week). This examination lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. We ask that you come with a full bladder so that the ultrasound technician can perform the ultrasound correctly. You should therefore empty your bladder an hour beforehand at home and then drink 2 glasses of water.

What do we look for during the combination test?

The combination test therefore consists of two parts. With the blood test we measure the values of two substances in your blood. In the event of a birth defect, this level is often higher or lower than normal. The neck fold measurement then takes place via an ultrasound. The neck fold is a think layer of moisture under the skin in your baby’s neck. The thicker the neck fold, the greater the chance that he/she has Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome or Patau syndrome. The blood test results and the neck fold measurement are combined and processed by the computer. A probability calculation is made. Is there an increased risk of having a child with one of the syndromes? Then you can opt for follow-up examination to be certain. You will receive the result via your midwife, (family)doctor or gynaecologist, usually within a week.

What about the costs and reimbursement?

The combination test is not reimbursed under the basic insurance. The costs for the examination are € 176.96. You can pay via debit card or credit card. You can possibly claim the costs afterwards from your health care insurer, depending on your supplementary insurance.
